RWTH’s proposal for a research building "Center for Wind Power Drives (CWD) with a System Test Bench for On-Shore Wind Energy Plants" was approved by the Joint Science Conference of the federal and state governments (GWK). The cost of the building, including the test bench, is estimated to be 25.4 million Euro.

The new building will offer space for 55 academic and nonacademic employees from seven RWTH institutes in mechanical and electrical engineering. It will be integrated into the "heavy duty engineering" cluster of the RWTH Aachen Campus science park. Construction should be finished by the end of 2012, so that the test bench can be subsequently installed. Starting in September 2013, scientific investigations will begin, looking into the drive trains of on shore wind energy plants of up to 4 megawatts of power.

"Together, the participating institutes want to considerably enhance the reliability of the drive trains in wind energy plants. This means that basic knowledge needs to be acquired on the operative loads from the wind and energy fluctuations, as well as the critical operating conditions for the larger drive train components," explained Professor Georg Jacobs, Head of the Institute for Machine Elements and Machine Design. He adds, "With refined models for the effects of long term use and for test bench energy efficiency, we want to create and evaluate new drive train concepts for wind energy plants."
