E.ON Energy Research Center Moves Into a New Main Building
The time of inconvenience and temporary solutions is finally over. Starting immediately, more than 170 researchers, technicians, and administrative personnel from the E.ON Energy Research Center at RWTH Aachen University (E.ON ERC) are working in spacious and optimal conditions in their new main building, located on the northern edge of the Campus grounds. The move from the neighboring interim offices, which quickly became too small, to the new space was completed just a few days ago. The new rooms are spacious and provided with especially energy-efficient light, heating, and air-conditioning.
Professor Rik W. De Doncker, the founding Director of E.ON ERC, gives a positive summary of the four-year old cooperative research collaboration: "Our five professors and their teams at four different RWTH faculties have been working together outstandingly. Their collaboration will only intensify with this new building. Ultimately it was one of the main ideas of the public-private partnership to also physically bring together the key pillars of energy research in this RWTH project. Those involved took adequate time to plan the necessary steps down to the last detail, and it paid off. The result is a particularly efficiently temperature-controlled and lit building that will enable excellent work and communication. My colleagues' and employee's enthusiastic reactions second this."
The new compact E.ON ERC main building fulfills the highest architectural and engineering demands with economically sensible solutions. Energy efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability were and are the overriding principles in the planning, construction, and usage. At the same time, the innovative concept for the interior, with its well-lit central areas, allows for a lot of visibility between different floors, areas for research, and the surrounding landscape. Thanks to handsome break and quiet rooms and kitchenettes, there is ample opportunity for communication across subject disciplines to occur automatically. Alternatively, there are light, modern offices, labs, and seminar and conference rooms with plenty of space for the focused research on a future environmentally friendly, safe, and affordable energy supply.
