Backup / Restore
The IT Center's backup service allows RWTH institutions the to make and maintain backups of their data - including file versioning - and to make them available upon request. The data of individual computers are stored in a tape libary. For this purpose, a client software - Tivoli Storage Manager - is installed on the personal computer or workstation in question, which periodically and automatically transfers data to the tape library.
By participating in this service users can make sure that hard disk failure or inadvertent deletion of files does not result in the loss of important research data. In the event of data loss, the restore service can be used to restore your files.
The system is designed in such a way that the failure of individual components, as a rule, does not result in a failure of the entire system. For protection purposes, the system has redundant components, including all network and storage area network (SAN) connections as well as the tape robot arm. The use of several server machines makes it possible to maintain operation using established methods of collection. In this way, operational interruptions can be reduced to a minimum.
